Oman – Filing Industrial Design Applications is Now Possible

For the first time in the country, it is possible now to file for industrial design applications in Oman. The decision comes after waiting for two years from the issuance of the implementing regulations of the Industrial Design Law No. 67/2008.

The Patent Office in Oman is ready to receive industrial design applications after submitting the following filing requirements:

A legalized power of attorney.
Description of designs showing the elements of novelty.
Five – ten samples of the design to be protected.
A certificate of incorporation or an extract from the Registry (Legalization is not required).

For designs applications to be accepted they are to be novel and new and not disclosed to the public.

According to the Omani Design Law, the protection period is ten years, which can be renewed for two terms, five years each from the filing date.

Pursuant to Ministerial Resolution No. 51 for the year 2010 official fees related to the industrial property Law have substantially increased. The Ministerial decision has been published in the official gazette No 911 and will be effective after one month form its publication in the official gazette, that is, after June 15, 2010.

According to the new resolution, the raise in official fees is very high and it is a precedent compared to the old official fees.
