As you may recall, on 7 July 2006, the Trademark Registration and Protection Proclamation was published under No. 501/2006, however the implementing regulations were issued on 24 January 2013 with the effective date of 24 February 2013.
The new regulations consider all trademarks registered before 7 July 2006 legally un-effective and must be re-filed.
It is worth mentioning that the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office (EIPO) has given the owners of the trademarks registered under the old law a time period of 6 months starting from 18 December 2013 to resubmit their trademarks according to the new law, however, this period has been extended for another 6 months (i.e. 18 December 2014).
